Dr. Taylor Kandler

Family Medicine
University of  Alberta

Originally from Prince George, I completed a Bachelor of Health Sciences in Biomedical Studies with a minor in Indigenous Studies at the University of Northern British Columbia. During my undergraduate training, I pursued additional education in global health at Harvard University, and later completed an Indigenous Health studentship at Johns Hopkins University while conducting my thesis work. I went on to complete medical school at the University of British Columbia through the Island Medical Program. After graduating in 2022, I began residency training in Urology before transferring to Family Medicine at the University of Alberta following R1. During residency, I concurrently completed a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology through Harvard University. My thesis focused on methamphetamine and opioid overdoses in Alberta. My interests lie in health equity and in supporting populations experiencing structural disadvantage, particularly where social and systemic factors influence health outcomes. Outside of medicine, I enjoy reading, exercising, and painting. I really enjoy spending time with my wonderful friends - going to comedy shows, pubs or walks. I also love cooking and trying different recipes from my growing cookbook collection, which is very much underused in residency.

A colleague shared this about Dr. Kandler:

"Taylor is a champion in patient advocacy and trauma-informed care. In her work life, she focuses on providing primary care to under-served populations, including extensive work experience with Radius (the addictions medicine health clinic in Edmonton). Every patient she encounters she treats with respect and compassion, and goes out of her way to provide the highest level of care in all scenarios. Taylor also leads by example in balancing residency life with her outside life, and does it with ease. During her family medicine residency she has also been completing a Masters degree through Harvard University in public health. On top of all of this, she always finds time to participate in social events, and shows up for her colleagues and friends always. Taylor puts everyone in her life at the forefront of everything she does, and such immense selflessness is rare to come across these days. Taylor is one of those people that quietly exceeds in everything she does, and does it with grace and humility. A prime example of this is that Taylor was first a resident at UBC in urology, arguably one of the most challenging residency programs to match to in our country. Despite absolutely excelling in this field, she made the brave decision that so few of us can and decided her happiness was elsewhere in medicine where she could better serve her patients at the level of accessing care. She has been very vocal as an advocate for change in residency culture, and has served as a mentor for other residents to help guide them through the process of changing residency programs (myself included). I can think of no one who is more deserving of recognition in our field"
