Named Holidays

2007-2010

  • Resident shall receive (5) consecutive days off duty for Christmas (December 23 to December 27) or New Year's Break December 29 to January 2).  All Residents shall be available for service on December 28. Where possible, a Resident shall not be scheduled for on-call services the day preceding his or her (5) consecutive days off.
  • Residents are entitled to additional days in lieu if, during this block, they perform regular duty hours or call beginning on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year's Day.
  • All Residents receive 3 flex days off per year without loss of pay. These three days were granted to recognize that throughout the year there are instances when Residents will work the night before and into a Named Holiday for reasons of ensuring the appropriate transference of care.
  • Addition of: A resident who is a practitioner of a recognized faith that does not celebrate Christmas day may request that the (5) days off duty be scheduled at another time to accommodate the observance of an alternative Religious Holiday.

2002-2004
  • Addition of: In each event where a Named Holiday falls upon a Saturday or Sunday, the Named Holiday will be considered to lie on either the preceding Friday or following Monday in accordance with standard practice within Member Facility. This does not apply to Christmas Day, Boxing Day, or New Year's day.
  • Resident shall receive (5) consecutive days off duty during an 11-12 day period commencing December 23 that encompasses Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. 
  • Residents are not entitled to any additional days off even though one or more Named Holidays may fall within the (5) consecutive days.

1995-1997

  • Residents shall be entitled to the following Named Holidays: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada, August Civil Holiday, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Family Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and one Floating Day.

  • A Resident who is scheduled to and does work the day of any Named Holiday, shall have another working day in lieu of the Named Holiday scheduled during that particular rotation.  The date for this day in lieu shall be determined at the time the call schedule is made.
  • Resident shall receive (5) consecutive days off duty at Christmas or New Year's inclusive of Named Holidays and regular days off.  Residents are not entitled to any additional days off even though one or more Named Holidays may fall within the (5) consecutive days.
  • In recognition of Resident who are scheduled and take call on the day before a Named Holiday, and for reasons of ensuring the appropriate transference of care, work a portion of a Named Holiday, Residents shall be entitled to an additional (2) days off.
